There are so many options for things to see and do, here are some of our favourites.
Firstly, we suggest driving around Loch Ness in an anti-clockwise direction. As you drive into the pretty and popular village of Fort Augustus, turn right onto the B862 road. The road quickly climbs giving a wonderful view overlooking Fort Augustus and down Loch Ness itself.
After a few miles, you will pass a small Loch on your left and the scenery starts to become very rugged. After several more minutes of driving uphill, you will come to the brow of the hill with marked ‘viewpoint’ signs and two large laybys for parking on either side of the road. From here, the magnificent vista appears in front of you, and on a clear day, you can see for miles. It is also worth walking up the little hill on the left to get amazing views down Loch Ness.
Falls of Foyers
Continue along the B862 until you see a sign for Foyers. Turn left here and follow the windy road to the small village of Foyers. You will see a small car park on the right-hand side. Park here and cross the road to the little kissing gate opposite with the information board explaining the origins of the Falls of Foyers. The path down to the viewing platform is short but a little steep. There are steps and a handrail for assistance. It is also worth walking to the second viewing platform, just a couple of minutes further down.
From here, retrace your step back to the car park or continue further along the footpath for a pleasant woodland walk.
Dores
From Foyers, you can either take the shore road to the hamlet of Dores and on to Inverness, or you can go back to the B862 for more rugged scenery. At Dores, there is a little beach and a pub which could make a good stop for lunch.
Inverness
At the head of Loch Ness, you will be just a few miles from the City of Inverness with the usual shopping centres and a big cinema. There is a castle in Inverness, or you may wish to drive further to the battlefield of Culloden.
Drumnadrochit
From Inverness, return along the western shore of Loch Ness along the A82. This is also a lovely scenic road with plenty of laybys to take photos down Loch Ness itself. The little village has a couple of popular eateries as well as some public toilets and a Co-op.
Urquart Castle
Just a mile or two past Drumnadrochit is the car park for Urquart Castle. You can pay to go and have a look around the castle ruins or park the car and take a few quick photos by walking back up the road a little bit. Be very careful, this is a very busy area with lots of people and traffic and a hotspot for accidents.
Invermoriston Falls
Immediately after the sharp left turn into Invermoriston, you will see a car park and a bus shelter. Find a space in the car park and take the short 5-minute walk following signs to the ‘summer house’. From here, you get a great view of the Invermoriston Falls and the three bridges. The summer house itself makes for a great photo.
Fort Augustus
After another 15 minutes, you will be back in the very popular village of Fort Augustus. If you have time, we highly recommend the rib ride, or the boat trip if you prefer something a little calmer. There are several gift shops and eateries in Fort Augustus as well as a fish and chip shop.
Meals
If you are looking for somewhere to eat on your return to Spean Bridge, other than in Fort Augustus, we recommend The Invergarry Hotel or Rokeby Manor in Invergarry or The Whispering Pine Lodge adjacent to Loch Lochy.
