Wild Corrour & The “Trainspotting” Corbett: A Journey to Leum Uilleim

Distant Hills Guest House B&B Spean Bridge

If you want to experience the true scale and solitude of the Scottish Highlands, you have to leave the roads behind. For Day Three of our Moderate Walking Holiday, that is exactly what we did. In a week full of highlights, this “off-the-grid” adventure is often the one our guests talk about for years to come.

The Iron Road to the Isles

Our journey didn’t begin in the minibus, but on the platform at Spean Bridge. After a hearty Highland breakfast to fuel the day, we boarded the iconic West Highland Line. Often voted the most scenic rail journey in the world, the train winds through Monessie Gorge and high across the edge of the mountains, offering views that are simply inaccessible by car.

Our destination was the legendary Corrour railway station. Proudly holding the title of the highest mainline station in Britain, Corrour is a place of pure, isolated magic. Famously featured in the opening of the film Trainspotting, it serves as the ultimate gateway to the wilderness. With no public road access for miles in any direction, the moment the train pulls away and the silence of the moor descends, you realize you are standing in one of the last truly wild places in the UK.

The Ascent of Leum Uilleim

From this remote starting point, our trusted guide Dave Lamond led the group toward the striking peak of Leum Uilleim (The Leap of William). While technically classified as a Corbett, this mountain carries the stature and presence of a Munro.

The walk began with a classic Highland challenge—navigating some wonderfully squelchy, boggy ground near the station—before we began our steady ascent. As we gained height, the terrain firmed up into rocky ridges, and the air grew crisp. The beauty of this circular hike is its constant variety; one moment you are trekking through deep heather, and the next you are standing on an exposed ridge with the world at your feet.

A 360° Panoramic Masterclass

With the Highland weather gods firmly on our side, the summit of Leum Uilleim provided a viewing platform like no other. The 360° panoramic views were simply jaw-dropping. From our high perch, we could pick out the “greats” of the Scottish mountaineering world:

  • To the North: The mighty bulk of Ben Nevis and the serrated grey ridges of the Mamores.
  • To the East: The perfectly conical, unmistakable peak of Schiehallion.
  • To the West: The dramatic “Great Herdsmen” of Glencoe—Buachaille Etive Mòr and Buachaille Etive Beag—guarding the entrance to the glen.

Closer to hand, the deep, shimmering waters of Loch Ossian and Loch Treig added a splash of sapphire to the vast, golden-brown wilderness. Watching a herd of red deer move across the lower slopes far below us really hammered home the sense of being “away from it all.”

A “Distant Hills” Favourite

The day concluded with a relaxed walk back to the station, timed perfectly to catch the train home. There is a unique satisfaction in sitting on the train, tired legs resting, watching the mountain you just climbed disappear into the evening mist. We returned to the guest house just in time for a well-earned soak in the hot tub and a delicious home-cooked dinner.for a week of professional guiding, no single supplements, and stories that stay with you long after you’ve taken off your boots.
