A Wintry Start to the 2026 Season: Creag Meagaidh in the Snow

Distant Hills Guest House B&B Spean Bridge

Today marked a very special milestone: the official kickoff of our first Distant Hills Walking Holiday of 2026! Our Moderate Walking groups are back, and if today was anything to go by, we are in for a truly memorable week.

We began our season at the Creag Meagaidh National Nature Reserve, just a scenic 25-minute drive from the guest house. It’s a route we know and love, but today it felt like an entirely different world.

Into the White: Lochan Coire Ardair

The 7.5-mile walk to Lochan Coire Ardair is often our “warm-up” for the week, usually featuring clear paths and a gradual ascent through the beautifully regenerating birch woods. These woods are a testament to the conservation work here, but today they were transformed into a silent, frosted gallery. The Scottish spring had other ideas for our first day out! We found ourselves trekking through knee-deep snow in places, with a biting wind that certainly made sure everyone was wide awake and fully engaged with the landscape.

The path, which usually guides walkers gently toward the heart of the coire, was completely hidden beneath a pristine, thick white blanket. This transformed our steady march into a more deliberate, tactical hike. Every step required a bit more thought and a lot more energy. In these challenging wintry conditions, walking poles proved to be an absolute godsend. They provided that much-needed stability when the ground beneath the snow became uneven or icy, and helped the group maintain a steady rhythm despite the drifts.

While the conditions were physically demanding, the atmosphere was nothing short of magical. As we approached the head of the glen, the towering, ice-plastered cliffs of the Coire Ardair amphitheatre, the famous “Post Face” of Creag Meagaidh, emerged from the mist. They looked utterly spectacular against the shifting, moody skies, reminding us all why this is one of the most iconic sights in the Highlands.

The Reward of the Winter Toil

There is no denying that walking in deep snow is physically demanding; every step requires more effort, and the cold wind tests your resolve. However, the rewards for pushing through are incomparable. There is a profound silence that only comes with a heavy snowfall, and seeing the familiar Highlands transformed into an Alpine-esque wilderness makes the extra exertion feel like a small price to pay. Reaching the lochan and seeing it partially frozen, tucked away in its granite cradle, provided a sense of achievement that a dry summer walk simply can’t match.

Mesmerising Spindrift and Mountain Magic

One of the highlights for the group was watching the spindrift; fine, wind-blown snow, dancing across the ridges and swirling over the lochan. It created a mesmerising, ethereal landscape that you only get to see when the elements really align. It was a stark reminder of the raw power and beauty of the mountains.

The wintry conditions pushed us all a little bit further than usual, providing a proper workout and the perfect introduction to the scale and beauty of the Highlands. There’s no better way to earn that post-walk tea and cake back at Distant Hills!

What’s Next?

It was a tough, rewarding, and beautiful start to the year. We’ve shaken off the winter cobwebs and the group is buzzing for the adventures still to come.

As always in the Highlands, the big question remains: what do the weather gods have in store for us tomorrow?
