The latest scoop from Distant Hills

The New Year is always a time for reflection and 2022 presented lots of positive change for both Distant Hills, Spean Bridge and the surrounding area. Above all, it felt fantastic to return to a greater degree of normality as we saw the return of visitors from all over the world. Better still, we didn’t have to hide behind our face masks as we welcomed guests into our home! Did you know, we had guests from over 30 different countries in 2022!

So, what’s new at Distant Hills

In addition to our new hot tub, which was a great success during 2022, we have upgraded two of our double rooms to include king-sized beds to provide extra comfort. The front of the house will also be getting a little facelift this Spring. We’ll post new photos on our new website as well as on our Facebook and Instagram accounts, so keep a look out. If you haven’t seen our new website yet, take a look here and let us know what you think. https://www.distanthillsspeanbridge.co.uk/

A huge thanks to Sam Chandler at Retype for designing the website for us and for his commitment, patience and expertise to getting it just right. If you’re looking for help with a website or any form of digital media, we can highly recommend Sam at sam@retype.com.

What’s new in Spean Bridge and nearby

Spean Bridge might be a small village, but there’s always something going on. Last year saw a couple of business take-overs, some new business openings and several renovations and refurbishments. Below are a few of the latest changes benefitting visitors to the area.

Off-road Segway and Target Sports

Last Spring saw the opening of Wild Highland and the opportunity for our guests to test their skills and balance on a brand-new off-road segway course as well as have a go at a range of target sports from axe-throwing, spear throwing and archery. Cameron and I spent a fun-filled morning trying all the activities with Stuart and Yvonne, Wild Highland’s friendly owners. If you have a competitive side and like doing something a little bit different, this is a must. Wild Highland is situated on the edge of the village just a short walk from Distant Hills Guest House and its elevated situation provides the most stunning setting for these fun outdoor activities. New Local Amenities

After a hard-fought for campaign, Spean Bridge now has a brand-new independent pharmacy. The Mhor Pharmacy is situated just behind the Spar shop and stocks a wide range of pharmacy products and services as well as some beautiful gifts and cards.

The Spar shop has also been refurbished and has a new bakery and hot snacks counter, perfect for that lite bite! It’s Spean Bridge’s version of Greggs!

The Highland Bridge Hotel, previously known as the Aonach Mor Hotel, has recently been refurbished and provides another local venue for our guests to have a drink and a bar meal.

The Commando Memorial and memorial garden have also had their own facelift with recent repair and conservation works. If you haven’t visited the Commando Memorial before, we highly recommend you do this. The statue itself is very impressive and the 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains, including Ben Nevis, are spectacular.

‘A View of Distant Hills’ – A guest perspective on our walking holiday

We were blessed to have an author amongst our guests on last October’s harder walking level week, Dave Hanson, who kindly gifted us a fantastic written piece describing his experience on a Distant Hills walking holiday. It’s a wonderful read whether you’re a keen walker and interested in one of our walking holidays or not. If you do have a few minutes, please do read Dave’s personal reflection here https://www.distanthillsspeanbridge.co.uk/a-view-of-distant-hills/

That’s all for now. Over the coming months, we’ll be writing more blog articles for our website, which will feature our adventures sea kayaking with seals, canoeing down local rivers and climbing up and canyoning down icy cold waterfalls, all done in the local area with local companies. To read our blogs, click here. https://www.distanthillsspeanbridge.co.uk/distant-hills-journal/

Whatever your travel plans this year, we wish you a fabulous time. If you are considering staying with us this year, please do not leave it too long to book as our diary is filling up fast.

We hope to see you soon!
