Exploring New Routes in the Scottish Highlands

Living in Spean Bridge, just 10 miles north of Fort William and Ben Nevis, we are blessed with an incredible variety of hillwalking routes that cater to all levels of walkers – Could we have found the Best Moderate Walk in the Scottish Highlands (?)*. Our guests are often drawn to iconic routes such as Meall Cumhann in Glen Nevis, Beinn na Lap near Corrour, and Peameanach Beach and the village ruins near Arisaig. However, to keep our guests coming back for more and to showcase the true beauty of the Highlands, we’re always seeking out new hiking routes that add diversity and excitement to the walking experience.

In 2024, we introduced several new hiking routes that turned out to be quite popular. These included Biod an Fhithich in Glen Shiel, Black Wood & Dun-da Lamh Fort just past the Creag Meagaidh Nature Reserve, Sgurr an Utha near Glenfinnan, and Am Bathach and Ciste Dhubh in Glen Shiel. Each of these new routes provided a mix of stunning scenery, varied terrain, and the perfect level of challenge, making them a big hit with our walking holiday guests.

A highlight of our autumn walking holidays in 2024 was the weather – YES, the sun really did shine in the Highlands in October! Our drying room was miraculously used just once during the entire 3 weeks of walking holidays last October, a rare but delightful occurrence. While we can’t promise the same conditions every autumn, we live in hope for another glorious season!

Our Top Walk of 2024: Biod an Fhithich

BelowAs a moderate-level hike, Biod an Fhithich definitely stood out as the highlight of 2024. The walk starts with a stunning drive from Distant Hills Guest House, which takes around an hour, but the views on the way are absolutely jaw-dropping. The well-maintained path begins with a gradual ascent to a saddle where visitors are greeted by the awe-inspiring views of the Forcan Ridge. On both occasions, we were treated to the haunting sounds of stags roaring, though they proved to be elusive, adding an element of mystery to the hike.

From the saddle, a well-defined path leads up to the grassy summit of Biod an Fhithich, which reaches a height of 645m. Once at the top, hikers are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Loch Duich, and on a clear day, the Isle of Skye can be seen stretching out into the distance. In the far-off horizon, you can even spot the iconic Eilean Donan Castle, making this hike one of the most memorable for those who complete it.

This out-and-back route is approximately 4 miles in total and takes between 4 to 5 hours to complete, with a couple of breaks along the way to take in the breathtaking surrounding mountains. The perfect combination of moderate challenge and incredible rewards!
