From Mountain Peaks to Candlelit Feasts: An Autumn Walking Break in the Scottish Highlands

Distant Hills Guest House B&B Spean Bridge

The aroma of a hearty Scottish breakfast lingers in the air, mixing with the gentle sounds of tired but incredibly satisfied feet padding down the hallway. It can only mean one thing: our latest Autumn Walking Break in the Scottish Highlands is drawing to a close. What a week it’s been!

Here at Distant Hills Guest House, we work hard to ensure our holidays are the perfect blend of challenging hikes and genuine 4-star comfort—think delicious food, a licensed bar, and, of course, that essential hot tub soak at the end of a long day. Having been the proud winners of Channel 4’s “Four in a Bed,” you know the welcome and quality are second to none, and with our expert guide, Dave Lamond, leading the way, every step is a masterclass in safety and local knowledge.

This week proved that the Scottish weather is as dramatic as the scenery, but nothing could dampen the spirit of this intrepid group. We’re fully booked for this year, but read on for a taste of the adventure and then be sure to secure your spot for 2026—bookings are now open!

Monday: Moderate Hill Walking to Lochan a’ Choire

The week kicked off with a fantastic moderate hill walk to the breathtaking Lochan a’ Choire in the Creag Meagaidh Nature Reserve. This truly is a magnificent corner of the Highlands.

The lochan itself is a beautiful, teardrop-shaped freshwater loch nestled at the foot of towering, nearly 400-metre high cliffs in a spectacular, whale-back-shaped amphitheatre. The well-maintained path from the car park makes for a brilliant walk, offering dramatic scenery and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife. It was the perfect way to stretch the legs and set the standard for the adventure ahead.

Tuesday: Conquering the Munro – Càirn na Caim

Following an excellent warm-up, Day 2 saw us taking on an ambitious new route: tackling the Munro, Càirn na Caim (941m). This was a proper day out! Dave guided the group through a 12.6km distance with a demanding 630 metres of ascent. The initial good track soon gave way to the classic Highland experience: “much wetter/boggy terrain higher up.”

We knew summit views would rely on a bit of luck, but the clouds provided “amazing breaks” in the weather, delivering dramatic views and ensuring successful Munro bagging for several guests. It was a spectacular and rewarding way to continue the week.

Mid-Week Recharge: Iconic Landmarks

Wednesday was our essential rest day—a chance for muscles to recover and boots to dry out! The group spent the day exploring some of the most famous sights the Highlands have to offer: the majestic Ben Nevis, the brooding grandeur of Glencoe, the imposing presence of The Three Sisters, and the sharp peaks of Antriocchtan. A little rain certainly didn’t stop us! This break was a brilliant reminder that a Scottish Highlands break is about soaking up the culture and history as much as the hill walking.

Thursday: Plan B Proves Best – Glen Nevis & Polldubh Falls

Adventure requires adaptability. When a road closure along Glen Roy halted our planned route, Dave seamlessly switched to a stunning alternative: Glen Nevis and Polldubh Falls. Following the River Nevis through beautiful wooded stretches to the Lower Falls at Polldubh, the path was wonderfully quiet, despite being “rough, eroded and boggy” (a healthy Bog Factor 4/5!). This ensured the atmosphere remained peaceful and rugged, with the beautiful, teardrop-shaped falls providing a peaceful, rugged atmosphere that was a genuine treat for the eyes.

Friday: North Face of Ben Nevis & the CIC Hut

We had a truly fabulous final walk today to the North Face of Ben Nevis and Allt a’ Mhuilinn. This route, while not a summit attempt, offered some of the “best views of Britain’s most mighty rock scenery.” It was magnificent!

The timing was dramatic, with the group managing to get back to the warmth of the guest house just as the full force of Storm Amy hit. We celebrated a great day with a welcome mug of tea and cake—the perfect end to a great day’s hiking.

A Candlelit Conclusion (and 2026)

The day’s drama wasn’t quite finished! With Storm Amy battering Spean Bridge, we were plunged into an unexpected power cut. But here at Distant Hills, we turn every challenge into a memorable moment.

A huge thank you goes to one of our guests—a retired dietician who stepped up as a very willing chef! Dinner tonight was a delicious, hearty soup, served by the flickering light of candles. It was a unique, memorable end to the holiday, proving that nothing can dampen the community spirit here.

If this sounds like your idea of a perfect adventure—full of spectacular walks, expert guidance, and great camaraderie—you’re in luck! Our 2025 walking holidays are now fully booked, but you can secure your own unforgettable adventure by booking your spot for 2026 now!
