The Long Walk Home: Corrour to Spean Bridge via the Lairig Leacach

Distant Hills Guest House B&B Spean Bridge

For the fourth and final walking day of our autumn Distant Hills Walking Holiday, we swapped summits for a journey: the train out to Corrour, then a 27km walk from Corrour to Spean Bridge, all the way home to our own front door.

After Thursday’s adventure on the Devil’s Ridge, and with showers in the forecast, our guide Dave came up with the perfect plan. Breakfast was at 6.50am, and at 7.37 we walked down to Spean Bridge station together to catch the 07:57 train on the West Highland Line. There is something rather special about starting a hill day with a train ticket!

Corrour: the Station in the Middle of Nowhere

Corrour is the highest mainline railway station in Britain, and one of the most remote: there is no public road to it, just the railway, the moor and the hills. We have been here before, on our walk up Leum Uilleim, the “Trainspotting” Corbett, but this time the plan was different. The signpost outside the station points the way to Spean Bridge, and that is exactly where we were going.

We set off across the moor in a mix of sunshine and showers, with the train rattling away behind us and a very long way to walk.

Down to Loch Treig

The track drops steadily from the moor to the head of Loch Treig, a long, lonely loch hemmed in by steep hillsides, with the old Creaguaineach Lodge standing beside the water. In the autumn light, with the bracken turned to copper and the showers chasing each other down the glen, it was a glorious place to be.

Through the Lairig Leacach

From Loch Treig the route turns north into the Lairig Leacach, the old pass that runs beneath the Grey Corries and leads all the way back towards Spean Bridge. Dave had never walked it before, and he had warned us the night before that it would be very wet underfoot with plenty of river crossings. He was not wrong! Gaiters were deployed, boots went straight through the burns, and nobody minded one bit.

This is wonderfully wild country, with rocky peaks rising on either side and not a road or a house in sight. As Dave put it afterwards, there were mostly nice conditions, “but plenty of showers still burling through too”.

The Long Walk Home

Mile after mile the pass led us on, over rock slabs, along the river and finally out onto the track that leads down to Spean Bridge. Dave’s figures for the day were 27km, with 440m of ascent and 626m of descent. It is not often you can finish a big day in the hills by walking straight back to your guest house.

That’s a Wrap on our Harder Walking Week

And so ends a brilliant week. In four walking days this group has explored the Nevis Gorge and Meall Cumhann, climbed two Munros above Loch Quoich, crossed the Devil’s Ridge for a third, and walked home from Corrour.

Dave thanked everyone for their “superb efforts and attitudes”, and we could not agree more. Thank you to every one of you for your company, your laughter and your determination, and thank you to Dave for guiding every step. Haste ye back!
