From Bothies to Baronial Castles: A Journey Through Lochaber’s History

Distant Hills Guest House B&B Spean Bridge

If day one of our Moderate Walking Holiday was about the raw power of the elements at Creag Meagaidh, day two was a masterclass in the rich, layered history of Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands. Our 2026 guests traded the deep snow for a journey that spanned centuries—from humble mountain shelters to the ancestral seat of a Highland Clan.

A Cinematic Start: Eas Chia Aig

Our adventure began at the spectacular Eas Chia Aig waterfalls. You might recognise the dramatic dark waters and arched bridge from the film Rob Roy; it’s a spot that looks cinematic in any weather. From here, we left the roar of the falls behind and followed a peaceful forest track along the northern shores of Loch Arkaig.

The scenery here is breathtakingly quiet. Surrounded by ancient trees and the shimmering loch, it’s a place where you can truly feel the “quiet magic” of the Highlands.

The Humble Bothy: Invermallie

After several kilometres of easy-going walking, we reached Invermallie Bothy. For those who haven’t encountered one before, a bothy is a simple, remote shelter left unlocked for hikers and stalkers to use. Stepping inside Invermallie is like stepping back in time; it’s a building steeped in character and history. We took a quick peek inside to appreciate its rugged charm—and perhaps to be thankful for the 4-star comforts waiting for us back at Distant Hills tonight!

Grandeur and Gallantry: The Achnacarry Estate

In a perfect contrast to the simplicity of the bothy, the afternoon took a grand turn as we returned through the Achnacarry Estate.

This is the heart of Cameron country. We explored the grounds of the historic Achnacarry Castle, the seat of the Chiefs of Clan Cameron since the 17th century. The estate holds a somber and proud history; during WWII, it served as the legendary “Commando Basic Training Centre.” Thousands of elite soldiers passed through these very gates to earn their green berets.

Passing by the Clan Cameron Museum, we took a moment to reflect on the incredible heritage of the land we were walking through.

Why This Walk Matters

What makes this specific route so special is the sheer variety. In a single day, our guests experienced:

  • Natural Wonders: The power of the Chia Aig falls.
  • Remote Wilderness: The solitude of Loch Arkaig and Invermallie.
  • National History: The wartime legacy of the Commandos and the enduring spirit of the Clans.

It is exactly this blend of immersive scenery and deep-rooted storytelling that defines a Distant Hills Walking Holiday.
