A Picture Paints a Thousand Words
When you fall in love with a place, it can be difficult to describe to others what makes it so special. It is the same for us when we try to convey to potential visitors the sheer beauty and magic of the Scottish Highlands.
We have been living at Distant Hills Guest House in Spean Bridge, near Fort William, for almost two years now. With weeks and months spent in lockdown, we have been blessed with a special opportunity to explore and really get to know our immediate environment. We have walked miles and miles and discovered lots of hidden gems and, as travel restrictions allowed, we began to explore further. The more we discovered this spellbinding part of the Highlands, the more we wanted to explore, and the more we fell in love.
The Most Stunning Landscape in the World
We have learned that there is literally so much to see and do in Lochaber, which is the traditional district name given to this area of the West HIghlands. From the UK’s tallest mountain (Ben Nevis) to the UK’s deepest freshwater loch (Loch Morar), to miles and miles of beautiful white sandy beaches and thousands of acres of woodland, we are situated in one of the most stunning landscapes, we argue, in the world!
While a picture may paint a thousand words, we could not decide on just the one picture, so we decided to put a short video together to try and encapsulate the beauty and essence of the West Highlands. We also thought it was the perfect opportunity to show how we have developed our business since the start of the pandemic and the full range of products we now offer at Distant Hills Guest House.
The first part of the video highlights some iconic images, and most visited parts of the West Highlands, ie the Glenfinnan Monument and Viaduct, Eilean Donan Castle, the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye, Ben Nevis and the white sandy beaches at Arisaig. These are all very popular destinations for our own guests. We have also tried to show a range of different activities that can be enjoyed while staying at Distant Hills. Lochaber is known as the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’ after all.
The middle section of the video showcases our comfortable and stylish Distant Hills Guest House accommodation, with a special focus on our beautiful, secluded garden with its own pretty stream. We want potential visitors to know that the sun does shine often in Scotland, and when it does, our south-facing garden provides a fabulous sun trap. This is made all the better by being able to order a refreshing local craft beer, and a sharing platter, meaning you can sit back and relax without having to get ready to go out again, if you do not want to.
Since taking over Distant Hills Guest House in Spean Bridge, we have introduced two new significant offerings. The first is that we have installed a small kitchen through in our own private living quarters, so we can rent the whole of Distant Hills Guest House exclusively to one group. Sleeping up to 14 people, our house makes the perfect place to host a family celebration or get together with friends, especially at, but not exclusively to, Christmas and New Year.
And finally, we wanted to remind potential guests, that we offer guided walking holidays in April and October. The group scene that you see in the video is one of our popular moderate walks to the Peanmeanach beach and bothy on the West Coast. We had just been watching the Jacobite Steam Train puff away in the distance on its twice daily journey to Mallaig from Fort William. Other clips show me walking in Glen Nevis and Cameron walking towards the summit of the Grey Corries’ ridge overlooking Aonach Mor and Aonach Beag. The final sunset and moonrise image overlooks the peaks of Glen Coe and was taken as we were driving back from exploring the Ardnamurchan Peninsula one day last November.
